President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the completion of renovations at the Aasaharaa Mosque and Funeral House in Malé City, following a design concept he developed during his tenure as Mayor.
Speaking to reporters after the renovation, President Muizzu shared his vision of transforming the Aasaharaa Mosque into a more spacious and welcoming place. He expressed his desire to make it easier for families to spend time at the mosque during their most challenging moments, and voiced satisfaction at seeing the project reach completion.
"I'm pleased that we were able to complete the renovations according to the concept we envisioned. It’s a reality now, and I’m very happy with the outcome. I hope everyone—both staff and visitors—feels comfortable in this enhanced space. With the increased capacity, more people will be able to benefit from the mosque’s facilities. I hope it becomes the kind of place the community truly wants," President Muizzu said.
The Aasaharaa Mosque was closed for repairs in May last year, but the project faced delays due to various issues, including contractor-related problems. The original contractors were paid, but failed to progress adequately, leading to the cancellation of their contracts.
Former Mayor Adam Azim explained that the mosque's construction was delayed due to improper execution by the initial company, forcing the City Council to reassign the project. Subsequent delays occurred due to modifications in the mosque's design and painting.
Azim also revealed that a total of MVR 71.7 million was spent on the renovation project. While the lower section of the mosque was reopened on September 6, the mosque was officially inaugurated today after the full completion of the renovation work.
