The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has published the names of 43 income tax defaulters, with many of those listed belonging to the tourism sector. The list also features several major companies.
MIRA has consistently disclosed information about businesses that have failed to pay taxes to the state. When these companies are identified, they are granted additional time to settle their dues. If they still fail to comply, MIRA initiates legal action. In some cases, the agency recovers tax dues by freezing the defaulters' bank accounts.
According to data released on June 13, MIRA recovered MVR 90 crore last financial year by freezing the bank accounts of over 200 individuals for non-payment of taxes. The agency had frozen the accounts of 285 individuals who, despite receiving notices, had not cleared their tax dues.
In total, MIRA took action against 17,054 individuals last year for failing to pay taxes, leading to MVR 3.9 billion in tax defaults.
MIRA has filed 20 cases in court to recover unpaid tax dues, and during legal proceedings, they have managed to collect MVR 3,35,429. Additionally, 795 defaulters will be granted another opportunity to settle their dues, amounting to a total of MVR 1.9 billion.
