The Ministry of Defence has announced that inspections will begin next month to ensure compliance with regulations regarding the handling and storage of hazardous chemicals.
In a statement, the ministry highlighted that the import and storage of hazardous chemicals, acids, and poisons produced from such substances—though not contagious—are regulated under Section 3 of the 'Prohibition of Smuggling to the Maldives Act.' The ministry, under the 'Regulations on Hazardous Chemicals,' has the authority to inspect chemical warehouses and ensure that the transport of these materials adheres to the rules as needed.
"Starting from October 1, 2024, as per the laws and regulations governing the inspection, import, and storage of hazardous chemicals, awareness will be raised in various areas," the statement read.
The operation has been named 'Operation Hiraas Faas'. While the Defence Ministry allows for the legal import, possession, and storage of chemicals, there have been reports of individuals violating these regulations during transportation and storage.
"We see this as a serious threat to public safety, which could cause irreversible damage if the regulations are not properly enforced," the ministry stated.
The ministry emphasised that this effort aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of building a healthier society. The President has supported this initiative through the various mandates of government ministries.
"It is essential to enforce the laws and regulations designed to safeguard public safety and security," the ministry added.
Special efforts will be made to ensure that the Defence Ministry can effectively implement the legal requirements outlined in the regulations.
