Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and HA. Ihavandhoo Council have signed an agreement to develop a dockyard and slipway on Ihavandhoo.
At a ceremony held today in Ihavandhoo, MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim signed on behalf of MPL, while Ihavandhoo Council President Ahmed Sobah represented the council.
During the event, Wajeeh emphasized the importance of the new dockyard and slipway for enhancing maritime services in the northern region. He stated that MPL is committed to starting the project without delay.
"We will begin the work immediately," Wajeeh assured.
While acknowledging potential challenges, Wajeeh expressed confidence in the long-term benefits of the project for the country.
"When something new like this starts, there may be some initial issues, but given our geographical advantage, the country will eventually benefit from it, if not today, then in the near future," he said.
Council President Ahmed Sobah highlighted the positive impact this development will have on the local community.
"This project will create job opportunities for the people here, and we are eager to get the process underway as soon as possible," Sobah remarked.
MPL announced that the dockyard and slipway are part of the broader Northern Maritime Service (UMS) initiative. Additionally, the company reported the installation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Gate in Uligam and signed an agreement with the island council to operate a water barge for bunkering services in Thuraakunu Atoll.
