The Maldivian government has initiated discussions with China's Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the construction of a bridge linking Thilafushi and North Thilafushi.
This move is part of broader infrastructure plans announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during this year’s Independence Day celebrations.
In his speech, President Dr Muizzu revealed that construction on a bridge connecting Giravaru and Uthuru Thilafalhu is expected to begin in 2026. He also confirmed ongoing negotiations with the AIIB to secure funding for the project, with a formal proposal to be submitted soon.
The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure disclosed that Minister Abdulla Muthalib, alongside AIIB officials, reviewed the pre-feasibility study yesterday. The Ministry highlighted that the bridge project is part of a larger effort to enhance connectivity within the Greater Malé Region, which is expected to spur economic growth.
Under the previous administration led by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, a portion of Uthuru Thilafalhu had been designated for land distribution to individuals over 20 years old who were registered with Daftharu. However, the new administration has reversed this decision, opting instead to pursue large-scale agricultural initiatives in the area.
