The Judiciary Committee of the Parliament has approved the appointment of Legal Secretary to the President, Abbas Shareef as the Prosecutor General (PG).
The committee interviewed Abbas to see if he meets the requirements for the post of PG.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Husnee Mubarik said the committee had confirmed Abbas' qualifications for the post of PG. He said no complaints had been received during the public opportunity to file a complaint against Abbas.
The committee interviewed Abbas where he scored 93.91 percent. Therefore, Abbas was approved unanimously by the members present at the committee meeting.
The parliament will approve Abbas' appointment as the prosecutor general at 9:00 am tomorrow.
Abbas, who holds a law degree from the University of Tasmania, has also served as Director General of the President's Office and a member of the FAM's Appeals Committee. He also served as a judge of the High Court of Maldives from 2011 to 2015.
He has also been the lawyer of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. He also represented President Abdullah Yameen in the Supreme Court case related to the presidential election.
The post of Prosecutor General became vacant following the removal of the previous PG, Hussain Shameem.
