Managing Director of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim has said that all preparations have been completed to start the bunkering service in the north.

The administration had initially planned to commence the service in February this year. However, it was postponed to July, and then 22 August. The government is now aiming to launch bunkering services in the north on 20 September.

In a Facebook post, MD Wajeeh said that the two boats, tugboats and the pilot boat used for the start of the bunkering service have been taken to Ihavandhippolhu. The requirement for providing such an international service has also been completed by setting up the International Ship and Port Security Gate, he said.

"Thank you, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Starting this service in the early stages of your tenure will bring about a revolutionary change to the country's economy. This is a much needed service in the country but had not been initiated under any administration until now. We are grateful for the president's humility and vision," Wajeeh said.

He said that with the bunkering service, Ihavandhippolhu will provide 14 more services to international customers. This will provide more avenues for other state-owned companies, private companies and individuals to generate revenue, he said.

Wajeeh said that the second phase of the project would be to set up oil terminals and oil tanks in the area.
