Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that the motive behind the murder of Bangladeshi national Luthufar might be homophobia, given he was alleged of being a homosexual.

Police made the statement during a press conference held on Thursday.

Talking to the press, Head of Serious and Organized Crime Department, Superintendent of Police Hassan Shifaau added that Luthufar was murdered on the 'Kurimagu' boat of Sh. Lhaimagu. Details of how he was murdered and then drowned has been revealed by those who were arrested regarding the murder, according to him.

The four Bangladeshi's arrested regarding the case had revealed to the police that Luthfar had engaged in homosexual activities aboard the boat as well. Shifaau added that they had lodged a complaint regarding this before and noted that they had enough evidence to prove it.

Four co-workers of Luthfar has been detained, who has since confessed to the murder during interrogation and in court as well. Three of them had taken part in the murder.

Luthfar was murdered on the night of April 22nd on the boat. Islanders near the harbor had witnessed an usual sound from the boat during the time, but was unable to check up on the boat since it was a bit far away from the harbor. The timing of said incident and the murder was exactly the same.

Luthfar was murdered by suffocating him and was then thrown to the sea. However, around 1:30am the three complicit in the murder had taken his corpse back into the boat, gotten a change of clothes and dried the body before proceeding to lay him on his sleeping quarters.

After contemplating on what to do next with the corpse, they had decided to drown him. Weights were tied to the body on a nearby sandbank before drowning the body.
