The Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) has begun work to produce audiobooks of 49 books written by renowned Maldivian author Abdullah Farooq Hassan.
IUM said the initiative follows Farooq Hassan granting the university’s library permission to produce the audiobooks. A special ceremony was held to mark the initiative, attended by IUM Vice-Chancellor Dr Ali Zahir, university staff, the author and his family.
The university said the project aims to improve access to books for students, particularly those with visual impairments. During the ceremony, Farooq Hassan formally handed over the permission and was presented with a commemorative inscription in recognition of his contribution.
Speaking to V News, Farooq Hassan said he had donated books to educational institutions in Malé and Fuvahmulah on several occasions, but the initiative had been recognised by the Maldives National University and IUM. He thanked both institutions, describing the project as an important initiative with a noble purpose.
He said his aim was to make an enduring charitable contribution and support IUM’s efforts to promote knowledge.
Farooq Hassan has spent 54 years in writing and has published 62 books. A further 23 books are ready for printing, while work on nine more is ongoing.
His publications cover Islamic history, the life of Prophet Muhammad, the lives of caliphs and companions, prominent figures in the Islamic world, and the virtues of the Holy Quran.
