Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in more than 250 homes across two islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported.
In a post on X, the NDMA said flooding had been reported in more than 60 homes in Nolhivaranfaru and over 190 homes in Kulhudhuffushi City.
In Nolhivaranfaru, floodwater entered several homes, damaging household belongings. However, no evacuations have been necessary so far. Police and residents are working together to place sandbags, while rain continues to affect the island.
In Kulhudhuffushi, the city council is assessing the affected homes. The council, police, MNDF Fire and Rescue Services and the Maldivian Red Crescent are working together to drain floodwater. Rainfall in the city has since stopped.
The NDMA said it is monitoring the situation and coordinating with island councils to arrange humanitarian assistance for those in need.
The Maldives Meteorological Service issued an orange alert for Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu atolls until 6:15 am, followed by a white alert for the region from 10 am to 3 pm. Heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusts of up to 40 mph were forecast.
