The Parliament is scheduled to start the process of appointing a person to fill the vacancy of the Prosecutor General (PG) tomorrow night.
The parliament is planning to hold an extraordinary session tomorrow to start the process of appointing a new PG following the removal of Hussain Shameeeem as the PG.
Parliament Communications Director Hassan Ziyau told One Online tonight that an extraordinary session will be held tomorrow night to discuss the appointment of a person for the post of PG. However, he did not say when it would be held.
The deadline for nominations for the post of PG expires at 12 noon tomorrow.
It is learned that three candidates have expressed interest in the post of PG. They are former Criminal Court Chief Justice Ahmed Hailam, lawyer Adam Shameem and former High Court judge and President's Office Legal Secretary Abbas Shareef.
The requirements for the post of PG include being a citizen of the Maldives, being 25 years of age, not having been convicted of a crime, being a Muslim, or of fraud or bribery, not holding an elected or appointed political office and not being a member of a political party.
In addition, at least a first degree in law, at least four years of experience in the judicial and legal fields in the Maldives, not holding shares or positions in a law-related company or partnership or any other similar entity. It also includes being sane.
The President shall submit the names of the candidates to the Parliament for approval by the Parliament.
Shameem, who was formerly the PG, was sacked on serious charges that he had withdrawn some major cases involving former government officials illegally
