FENAKA has extended the deadline to fix streetlights in the islands until February 2025 upon request of the local councils.
In a press release, FENAKA said that the Utility Regulation Authority (URA) has extended the deadline on the recommendation of the President's Office as there are several challenges in doing so during the current time given to the councils to amend the lamps installed on the roads of the islands as per the standards set by URA.
FENAKA said it has extended the deadline to revise the street lights installed on the roads in the islands till February 25 next year as per the norms laid down by the URA.
FENAKA had earlier claimed that an inspection conducted by the company had found that streetlights in 144 islands did not meet the safety regulations, so they were given six months to correct the streetlights.
FENAKA started inspecting the lights installed on the streets of the islands after a young man, who tried to save a child who jumped into a puddle near a streetlight in R. Ungoofaaru, died on June 8.
Following the incident, FENAKA asked the councils to ensure the safety and security of streetlights in islands within 6 months, which expired on 1 August.
