The drawings of the "Hope Island" for the detention of juvenile delinquents has been completed.

The Home Ministry said that with the completion of the drawings, the next work is to decide on a financing model. The issue will be submitted next week to the Economic Council where a decision on the model would be made.

Minister Ali Ihusaan announced on April 6 that a rehabilitation facility would be set up to keep children who commit crimes away from the criminal environment.

Dhaalu Vaanee has been designated as 'Hope Island' for the project. The ministry says it can accommodate 400 children at a time.

The facility will provide the children with formal education, exercise and skills programs, starting with daily morning prayers.

Children living on Hope Island will be kept there for 18 years. They will then be required to serve in either the police or army for a certain period of time.

The government has decided to lower the age of criminal responsibility to 12 years instead of the current 15 years to improve the juvenile justice system.
