President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared Wednesday (August 14) as a government holiday amid the worsening weather conditions across the Maldives.

Chief Spokesperson at the President's Office, Heena Waleed revealed the news via X early on Tuesday evening, stating that the President has declared tomorrow as a holiday as a relief to students and government workers who are facing difficulties in traveling and walking due to the heavy rains.

The President assured the people that the government will continue to work day and night with special priority to minimize the damage caused to houses and families and provide assistance to the people amid the worsening weather conditions.

Flooding and tidal swells have been recorded at several islands in the country during the ongoing rains. In some islands, flood waters have been drained into the ocean by digging up to the beach.

There is also continuous rainfall in the city, which has caused heavy flooding in some areas. MNDF is working to drain water from the roads and to bring the city back to a normal state of operation.

The wind is also unusually strong in the city, so motorcyclists and bicyclists are advised to be careful during travel. Caution is advised, especially when crossing the bridge.
