All the flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa Housing Scheme will be handed over by coming October, Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haider has revealed.

The minister was responding to a question by North Galolhu MP Mohammed Ibrahim in the Parliament today while making the statement.

Sharing the reason for the delay in handing over the flats to the parliament, the minister said that when they took over the government, the ACC had stopped the handover of 4,000 flats in Phase Two of Hulhumalé due to alleged corruption.

“I have received information that the ACC has sent letters to the previous government twice to review the matter. However, the ACC sent letters to stop the work on November 16. We have not done any work since we came to power,” he said.

Therefore, the ACC had to investigate the matter and hand over the work to the ministry, he said.

The ACC examined the case and handed over the work to the ministry on February 14, he further revealed.

"This includes ensuring that the points remain unchanged in accordance with the rules, then re-reviewing the problematic forms and ensuring that the same standards are followed. In doing so, to act on a uniform basis among all, such as determining the treatment of documents submitted to prove 15 years of residence in the city and making it public,” the minister said.

The minister said the ministry is working to improve the situation and has sought the advice of an independent committee to determine the rules for allocating flats. At the same time, a committee comprising members of the Malé City Council has been formed and the issue of flats has been discussed with the committee, he said.

“The review of the work will start in the middle of this month and the handover of the flats to the 4,000 most deserving people will be completed,” he said.
