President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Malé City Council will have a role in evaluating the flat lists from the Malé City area.
President Muizzu today met with the members of the city council to identify their major concerns. During this meeting, Mayor Adam Azim said that many come to the city council often about the issue of flats and land.
"In the case of 4,000 flats, I would like to ask you to hand over the flats to those who have no problems as soon as possible. Then we ask you to take a decision after considering the evaluation of those who have problems," Azim said.
Azim’s comments were responded to by the President, who said that the city’s issues would be solved by the role of the city’s elected council.
The President said the government has decided to conduct the evaluation of the flat lists given by the previous government under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme in a transparent manner.
"The biggest issue is housing. This is just one project, and there will be many more. Hulhumalé, Malé, Gulhifalhu, Villimalé will see such projects. The completion of RasMalé will also bring about many more such projects. I assure that the council will continue to play a role in these matters," the President said.
The first six of the 32 towers of flats under the "Gedhoruveriyaa" scheme will be completed by October next year.
The ACC has investigated the re-assignment of the flats after public concerns over the release of the permanent list of flat recipients under the first phase of the previous government's housing scheme. At the time, the ACC said 60 per cent of the 4,000 flats allocated by the government were ineligible.
