The Democrats have proposed changing the parliament floor to reserve seats for political parties in the Parliamentary elections.

The party made the proposal at today's session during the debate to discuss the motion by MP Ibrahim Shujau on reducing the number of MPs in the parliament.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice President of Democrats Aishath Alaika Adnan said The Democrats were in favour of reducing the number of lawmakers. She added that it is important to reserve slots for parties during the election to ensure the minority gets representation.

"The ballot will make it possible for the public to vote for members and the party. So at the end of the day, when the ballot is counted, we will know the representation each party has. And the parties will get a slot to represent them," she said.

Alaika said that since the slots will be taken by people who will represent the party, it will also solve the issue of floor crossing as even if the MP changes, the party slot will not be lost.

By doing so, the party will directly decide who will be appointed to the seats reserved for the parties, she said.
