Parliament's Committee on Security Services (241 Committee) has decided to review the government's proposal to remove the minimum number of people from a single country for employment up to 100,000.

The committee began the process of reviewing the bill today and the deputy speaker of the parliament, Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim, presented the deadline for the completion of the bill as 13 August. The proposal was supported by Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim.

Nazim's proposal to set such a deadline came in the wake of comments made by Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, who heads the committee, on the need to pass the bill before parliament goes into recess, pointing out that the proposed amendment to the employment law is related to several people.

Parliament will go on recess on August 15 after completing the proceedings of the current session as the second session of the current year.

Independent member of the committee, Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru of Thulhaadhoo constituency, said that while the committee is working on the bill, it is important for the committee to know the number of expatriates currently in the Maldives with the country of their origin.

In response to Hannan's comments, committee chair, Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, said that the information the committee has decided to seek from the authorities to study the bill will include the number of foreigners.

MP Nazim said that 12 places have been shortlisted for information on the bill, so he submitted a proposal to the committee and approved it by August 10.

During the meeting, the members also expressed their views on the bill.

Hanimadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa said that if the bill is open for public comments, a lot of different opinions can be submitted, so it would be better for the committee to study the bill and conclude it.

However, Saleem, who heads the committee, said that it would go ahead as it was necessary to make announcements seeking public opinion on the bill as it was required by the rules.

Responding to this, Ibrahim said that no matter what opinion the people express by giving time to submit their views on the bill, they will have the right to take decisions in the best way they see fit.
