STELCO has entered into an agreement with Maldives National University (MNU) to conduct an academic study to determine the causes behind the hike in electricity bills over the past 10 years.
Managing Director Hussain Fahmy signed the agreement on behalf of STELCO and vice-chancellor Dr Aishath Shehnaz Adam signed on behalf of MNU.
Speaking on the occasion, Fahmy said that tMNU is truly an independent institution and STELCO will support MNU in every avenue of the research.
"Some households have made requests to do independent research on the cause of high electricity bills. What we at STELCO can do is to allow unrestrained access to our systems and share all our information with MNU," Fahmy said.
Fahmy said MNU will build a generation that will govern the future of the country and hence people will not doubt the decisions taken by it.
"There is no one in this country who can doubt MNU. I assure you that we will make all the resources available. Let's do this in such a way that the truth of the matter is revealed to the people without any restraint from any kind of demand," Fahmy said.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shehnaz said one of the main objectives of the agreement is to do a thorough study of the electricity bills issued by STELCO from 2014 to 2024.
"This study will try to determine the extent of power consumption in different sessions of the day, determine whether there is a seasonal variation in consumption, and, more importantly, how to increase the accuracy and clarity of STELCO's billing processes," Dr. Shehnaz said.
She also said that opening up all STELCO data to MNU without withholding it would make the research work much easier and would help STELCO to work out ways to provide electricity to the general public in a transparent and transparent manner in the light of providing electricity to the general public.
"One of the objectives of the study was to find out if there was a difference between the numbers billed and the numbers billed by the meters, and whether there was any difference between the numbers billed and whether there was any difference between the numbers billed and whether there was any difference between the numbers billed," Dr. Shehnaz said.
Recently, STELCO also decided to conduct an energy audit of households with high bills.
