The Parliament today approved the appointment of former Finance Minister Ahmed Munawwar as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Maldives.

President Mohamed Muizzu nominated Munawwar to the post and sent his name to the parliament after removing former Governor Ali Hashim from the post.

There were 85 members in the Parliament today, of which 78 voted in favor of his appointment. The remaining seven members abstained.

The Finance Committee of Parliament obtained information about Munawwar from various institutions during their review. Following their review, the committee also conducted an interview with Munawwar.

After a two-hour interview, Munawwar received more than 70 marks to be appointed to the post. Vice-President of Parliament, Ahmed Nazim moved that he be appointed to the post.

The motion was passed unanimously by the members present at the committee meeting.

Munawwar has previously served in the MMA for 10 years, including the post of Finance Minister, and has extensive experience in the financial sector.

He was also the advisor to the Finance Minister when President Muizzu sent his name to parliament for the appointment as the Governor of the MMA.
