The parliament has amended the rules to prevent hasty no-confidence motions against the President and Vice President.

The rules were amended by the 19th Parliament to expedite the process of impeachment.

However, the 20th Parliament on Wednesday amended part of Section 224 of the Parliament rules.

The newly-passed rules state that a seven-member committee formed to investigate a motion to remove the President and Vice President should complete the investigation within a maximum of 10 days from the reception of the motion.

Additionally, the first committee meeting should be held within 24 hours of giving notice to the members. Previously, a minimum six-hour notice was required and if anyone was summoned to the committee in connection with the matter.

As of now, anyone required to be summoned to the committee must be given a 5-day notice as opposed to the two-hour notice previously required.

The newly-amended rules allow a maximum of seven days to respond in writing to motions as opposed to 2-day period previously.

In its report sent to the Parliament, the General Committee said that they were changed because the committee members could not believe that the time and period stipulated in the previous rules were sufficient.
