An MVR 50,000 fine has been imposed on FENAKA for the death of a person due to electrocution.

In Ungoofaaru, 18-year-old Hussain Athiq was electrocuted last month while trying to save a child who jumped into a puddle a streetlight.

The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) said in a statement that it had initiated an inquiry on the same day after receiving information about the incident.

The URA said that the ungoofaaru council and FENAKA will clarify the circumstances leading to the incident. The investigation found that the cause of the incident was that the road lights were equipped with earth leak circuit breakers (ELCB) and miniature circuit breakers (MCB).

Further, the investigation further revealed that ELCB were not installed on street lights in many islands where FENAKA supplies electricity, the URA said.

"When the investigation of this authority established that the main reason for the said tragedy was due to negligence on the part of FENAKA Corporation Limited in providing electricity to the streetlights of the island. They have been directed to pay to this authority within 30 days," the URA said.

He said that in order to avoid such incidents, in rural areas where Fenaka provides electricity, if the street lights do not have ELCB and MCB installed, they should be installed within 30 days of the government holiday to ensure the safety of the street lights.

If it is not corrected within the stipulated time period, FENAKA will be asked to suspend power supply from streetlights till it is done, the URA said.
