The contingent of Maldivian athletes who will compete in the 2024 Olympics departed for Paris, France today.

TT player Fathimath Dheema Ali and athletics runner Ibadullah Adam will be the flag bearers at the opening ceremony.

At the age of 16, Dheema secured her Olympic qualification by winning the women's singles title in the South Asian table tennis qualifiers for the Paris Olympics 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal. Dheema defeated Sri Lanka's Bimandy Bandara 4-1 in the final. It was the first time a Maldivian athlete had qualified for the Olympics. With that honor, Dheema is going to the Olympics this time in the largest contingent in the history of the country.

Maldives will compete in four sports this year. They are TT, athletics, badminton, and swimming events.

Ibadullah, who is training in Jamaica, has been given a chance at the Olympics based on time trials. Ibadullah has returned to this year's events after spending days injured. Ibadullah did not appear at last year's Asian Games and Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) because of the injury. However, Ibadullah has recovered from the injury and is making a difference again.

Fathimath Nabaha is competing in badminton at the Olympics. The athletes going to the Olympics in swimming are Mohammed A'an Hussain and Aishat Ulya Shaig. Table Tennis Association of Maldives (TTAM) President Ali Rasheed (Ayya) is Maldives' chief de missionary for the Olympic Games.
