MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has stated that there is no reason to be disappointed with the results of yesterday's local council by-elections.
The ruling PNC won five seats in the six by-elections held yesterday, including three council seats in Malé City. MDP, the main opposition party, did not win any seats.
In a post on X, Fayyaz thanked the MDP candidates for their courage and efforts in the by-elections. He said there was no reason to be disappointed with the election outcome.
“I hope the party has successful days ahead of us as we work to strengthen the party's management,” Fayyaz said.
As Fayyaz said, very few people turned out to vote in the election yesterday. According to the Election Commission (EC), 13,112 people were eligible to vote in the by-election in six constituencies but 3,528 people turned out to vote. That's 27 percent total voter turnout.
There were very few voters, especially in the city constituencies.
