WAMCO has said the company is working towards isolating waste in the Greater Male' Region to generate energy from waste by 2026.
Speaking on a TV programme, WAMCO's General Manager, Central Operations, Hussain Ibrahim, said that as part of the waste management initiatives that WAMCO plans to undertake, it is trying to turn waste into something that will benefit WAMCO in an eco-friendly manner.
"There's no garbage burning in Thilafushi now. As part of the process, the next step is to isolate the waste to generate energy from it. We are hopeful to generate energy this way by 2026," he said.
Ismail Ubaid from WAMCO's Business Development and Marketing shared further information with One in this regard.
"WAMCO is focused on preparing for it. We have 60,000 bags ready now. We are ready for insolation," Ubaid said.
Highlighting the progress made by WAMCO, Ibrahim said that earlier there were problems of dumping waste into the sea while transporting waste to Thilafushi by sea, but now the waste is being managed in containers covered with tarp.
"When it is containerised, all the debris will be in the container. The container will be sealed with tarp. So, there will be no mud in the sea," Ibrahim said.
"We urge household waste to be segregated. We are segregating waste at Thilafushi as well. However, we have not been receiving enough support in this regard yet. The waste is still all mixed," he added.
