The Ministry of Construction has revealed that 67.5 percent of the Hanimaadhoo Airport project has been completed.

Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muttalib, Indian Ambassador to the Maldives Munu Mahawar and Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen arrived at the site on Wednesday to inspect the project, which is being carried out under Indian Exim Bank's 800 million credit line.

Construction Ministry said they were briefed on the progress of the Hanimaadhoo Airport project met and had discussions with the contractor, consultant and project owner, The Regional Airports Company, on what the government could do for the speedy completion of the project.

The Ministry also shared the latest information about the Hanimaadhoo Airport project with the media. As such, 97 percent of the 2.4km runway and apron have been completed with work expected to be completed by November 2024, 51.4 percent of the 10,500sqm passenger terminal has been completed, and 75 percent work on the 3,800sqm air-traffic control tower has been completed with finishing works underway.

Additionally, the Ministry said that 44.5 percent work on the fuel farm and fuel jetty, 50 percent of road construction for airport, 55 percent of MNDF centre has been completed. The project is expected to be completed by March 2025.

The Hanimaadhoo International Airport development project was started on January 18, 2023. The Government of Maldives signed a credit line with India's Exam Bank in 2019 to build a terminal that could cater 1.3 million passengers annually

It also provides other facilities to expand international operations. The government has said that once The Hanimaadhoo International Airport is developed, airbus A320s and Boeing 737s used in international flights will be able to operate.
