The Government of Japan has donated 54 cars and four vans to the Maldives Police Service.

Commissioner of Police Ali Sujau accepted the vehicles on behalf of the Government of Japan at a ceremony held at Iskandar Koshi today.

Speaking on the occasion, Sujau said that while crime is on the rise in the society, efforts to ensure the safety and security of the people also need to be increased. He added that this can only be done by deploying better facilities in the police service. The capability of the police will be greatly enhanced to ensure safety and stability with vehicles donated by the Japanese government, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, the Japanese Ambassador to Maldives said that the vehicles donated to the Maldives Police Service are proof that the Government of Japan is encouraging law enforcement and will make it easier for the police to perform their duties to the best of their ability, especially in terms of traffic operations carried out by the police.

The Ambassador said the Japanese government would also provide other equipment to the police in the future, including metal detectors, passenger craft and rubber boats.
