First shipment of perishable cargo has been transported to Addu City directly from India.
Last month, MPL and Hithadhoo Regional Port had made arrangements for the permanent transportation of perishable cargo to Addu City. MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim had earlier said that the service would be provided through an Indian company, which brings the highest number of perishable cargo to the Maldives.
MPL said that the first shipment from Tuticorin in India was docked at Hithadhoo Port last night. A 150 tonnes of cargo has been brought to the Maldives.
According to Wajeeh, goods were previously brought to Addu on wooden boats, but this time the service will be provided on iron ore boats, which will ensure that the service is available without interruption on all days throughout the year.
MPL transports are being planned every ten to 15 days, with a cargo boat going to Addu, during which the people of Addu will be able to bring food and other essential supplies of general cargo to be brought from India.
