Attorney General Ahmed Usham has said that the Maldives will act in accordance with Maldivian laws and the principles of Islam in granting the rights under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
The AG's office said today that it participated in the review session held in Geneva yesterday and today for the review of the second periodic report submitted by the Maldives to the UN Human Rights Committee.
Speaking at the opening of the review, Usham said that Islam is one of the main foundations of the people of the Maldives. There can be no room for changing that basis. He highlighted that the Maldives will follow Islamic principles in granting the rights enshrined in the ICCPR.
Usham said the ICCPR rights in the Maldives will be granted in accordance with the Constitution, Maldivian laws and the principles of Islam.
The review was launched by the President’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Gender and the Department of Judicial Administration. Senior officials of the office were present during the review.
