Pro-government lawmakers have called not to move emergency motions till a certain number of signatures are not met.

Maafannu West MP Musthafa Ibrahim made the call in response to an emergency motion moved by MDP in parliament today accusing the government of failing to make timely loan disbursements to overseas students.

In the vote on whether to debate the emergency motion, 59 PNC members voted against it and the motion was dropped from the Parliament.

However, during the debate on the Copyright and Other Related Rights Act Amendment Bill, Musthafa said MDP members had moved the emergency motion to waste the parliament's time while such important matters were in Parliament.

Every day, the work of the Parliament has to start with an emergency issue, he said, adding that things should be designed so that such useless emergency issues do not enter the Parliament.

Musthafa said it is the responsibility of the Speaker of Parliament to shape the work of Parliament so that the people can enjoy the benefits of the promises made by President Dr Mohammed Muizzu. Therefore, he called for emergency motions to be moved in parliament only when a certain number of signatures are met.

According to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, every member has the opportunity to move an urgent matter in the interest of the people or the country.
