Clean Maldives and Dhiraagu have launched a tree planting initiative in Hulhumalé, aiming to plant a 1,000 trees.

Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim inaugurated the program during a ceremony held yesterday.

The "Go Green" event is the first of its kind in the country. Clean Maldives has launched a program to plant 1,000 trees under the slogan of "Planting Five Million Trees Across the Maldives."

Inaugurating the program, the minister said that in a hot, tree-scarce country like the Maldives, having a tree to provide shelter would benefit everyone. The minister urged everyone to plant a tree in the name of their mother and father as a personal responsibility.

Minister Thorig planted the first tree to start the program.

More than 350 participants planted trees in Hulhumalé during the event. 50 percent of them were children.

Clean Maldives said the Go Green campaign aims to make the Maldives greener and reduce the damage caused by climate change.

The ceremony was attended by officials from the Environment Ministry, Clean Maldives founder and event sponsors, HDC, Eye Care, Hardrock Hotel, MTCC, Asia Forwarding, school students and various associations.
