The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has completed contact tracing in connection with the meningococcal case.
The HPA said the work was completed after close contacts with meningococcal disease were treated. The agency highlighted that no further cases have been reported.
Contact tracing began on June 25 after a case of meningococcal disease was reported in the Maldives. However, the health ministry said the disease was not spreading.
The HPA had collected relevant information, conducted contact tracing, informed the contacts and given prophylactic medicine to the contacts.
Symptoms of invasive meningococcal disease:
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Becoming unconscious
- Redness/pimples on the body
- Seizures
- Discomfort with bright light
- Weakness
- Rapid breathing
The HPA said meningococcal disease is spread through the respiratory tract. Those who are closest to the infected person are at increased risk of contracting the disease.
The symptoms appear between one and 10 days after infection.
The HPA says the meningitis vaccine will protect against the disease. The meningitis vaccine will take about two weeks to develop the body's immune system.
It is important to get the vaccine at least two weeks in advance to protect against the disease.
