Judicial Service Commission (JSC) member and Supreme Court Judge Husnu Suood has said that Criminal Court not being given the ground floor of the building temporarily granted to the Court could lead to security issues.
Speaking at a meeting of the Parliament's Judiciary Committee held today with JSC and Judicial Administration Department (DJA) officials to inquire about the functioning of the institutions, Suood said that although the construction of the Hulhumale' COVID-19 facility allotted to the Criminal Court will completed by December 15, the building has been given to the Court for 5 years.
He raised issue with the Court not getting the ground floor while the building cost MVR 33 million for construction.
Elaborating on Justice Suood's remarks, Criminal Court officials who attended the meeting said that since people of serious criminal offences are being taken to the Court, they will need the ground floor of the building to maintain security.
Suood said the absence of a permanent building to run the Courts was a big problem and the matter was not limited to the Criminal Court alone. The Supreme Court, High Court and the rest of the lower courts also do not have a permanent building.
