Malé City Council has held discussions to convert unused land plots in the city to temporary parking lots.

Malé City Mayor Adam Azim stated that the City Council is currently working with the Maldives Police Service and the Transport Ministry to solve the parking problems in the city.

Under the Decentralization Act, vacant land in the city is under the control of the city council.

The City Council also stated that the public has to face many inconveniences due to reckless parking across the city currently.

"Vehicles parked in problematic areas are also being towed, such issues are causing a lot of inconvenience to the public," Azim said.

Temporary parking spaces available for the City Council:

Vacant land near Malé Hiyaa, Vacant land near Furqan Mosque, Vacant land near King Salman Mosque, Vacant land east of Dharubaaruge (to re-organise), Vacant land behind Fishermen's Park, Lands in front of Ameenee Magu Stadium and Futsal Ground

These are some of the places that the City Council has to build temporary parking lots and it is time to build on them, he said.

However, the decision was not supported by some council members and was referred to the Land Committee for a decision.

Since 2019, the city council has decided to remove the cemeteries in the city center and build parking areas as well as recreational parks.
