MIRA on Saturday revealed that the Green Tax revenue from guesthouses has doubled.

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Tourism, there are 860 guesthouses in operation in the Maldives, amounting to more than 14,400 tourist beds.

According to the MIRA's annual report, the state received MVR 6.3 million in green tax from guesthouses last year.

Previously, the green tax was not based on the number of rooms. However, since last year, hotels and tourist guesthouses in residential areas with more than 50 rooms have been charged a green tax of US$6 per day. Tourists staying in places with 50 rooms or less are charged $3 per day.

Resorts are the biggest source of green tax. Resorts collected MVR 58 million in green tax last year.

The green tax was introduced in 2016.
