Maldives Police Service has revealed that the deceased migrant worker was working on the Thilamalé Bridge, and not the Sinamalé Bridge as previously reported.
Police stated yesterday that a migrant worker had collapsed on the Sinamalé Bridge, and was announced dead on arrival at Tree Top Hospital.
They further added yesterday that the deceased migrant worker is an Indian national.
Following reports of the death of a migrant worker at the Sinamalé Bridge, China's CCCC company, which is carrying out the maintenance work of the Bridge denied the reports. They noted that they do not employ any Indian nationals in their operations.
Funded by USD 100 million in free aid and USD 400 million from Line of Credit from India, the Thilamalé Bridge project is the biggest project run by India in the Maldives. An agreement was signed between Afcons Infrastructure and the Government of Maldives in August 2021 to finish the project within two years.
Work on the project kicked off in August 2022.
The bridge project will include the construction of a 6.7-kilometer-long bridge along with a causeway link. The main bridges to be built between the islands are expected to measure around 140 meters each.
A marine wire duct measuring 1.45 kilometers will be deployed at the lagoons. A marine wire duct measuring 2.32 kilometers will be deployed at the surrounding sea and coastline. Roads measuring up to 2.96 meters will also be created.
Signalized junctions will be created at the land interchanges at Male’ and Vilimale’. Roundabouts will be created at Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.
A bus terminal will also be established at the bridge junction of each island.
