Maldives Inlant Revenue Authority (MIRA) has revealed that the Authority froze the bank accounts of more than 200 individuals in the last fiscal year for non-payment of taxes and recovered MVR 90 million.
According to data released by MIRA on Thursday, the accounts of 285 defaulters, who had failed to pay tax dues despite being served notices, were frozen last year and MVR 90.3 million was recovered for tax payments.
Last year, MIRA took action against 17,054 individuals for non-payment of taxes, which resulted in MVR 3.9 billion in tax default recovery.
According to the data, MIRA issued notices to 10,013 defaulters asking the to pay the pending tax amounts.
Mira said it had received MVR 2.2 billion as a result of issuing notices to them, and that 6,234 tax defaulters had paid the amount to MIRA on their own initiative last year, amounting to MVR 1.4 billion.
According to MIRA, as per the name and shame policy adopted by the agency, 473 defaulters have paid MVR 259.5 million, while 32 individuals have paid MVR 3.4 million through transactions through e-mail to pay taxes.
According to MIRA data, 20 cases have been filed in the court seeking unpaid tax dues, including MVR 3,35,429 in taxes during the court process, while 795 tax defaulters will be given a completely new opportunity to distribute the amount. The amount of tax dues due by them is MVR 1.9 billion.
