Maldives participated in the 28th Annual Meeting of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) which passed important resolutions for the management of marine fisheries in the Indian Ocean.
The meeting was held in Thailand from May 13 - 17.
At this year's meeting, 24 proposals were submitted by six countries for discussion, of which 16 were unanimously adopted by the 30 IOTC member states.
Maldives stressed on maintaining and maintaining the marine population.
One of the major achievements of this initiative was the passage of a resolution to manage the use of drifting fish aggregation devices used by large-scale fishing vessels in the Indian Ocean, the Fisheries Ministry said today.
The resolution will, for the first time, set up a list of wet mangroves used by large-scale fishing vessels in the Indian Ocean and monitor the number of wet turtles used in the region, the Ministry said.
The Ministry further added that this resolution is crucial to maintain fish populations in the Indian Ocean.
The resolution was passed by South Africa, Indonesia, Pakistan, the European Union, South Korea, Mauritius and Seychelles by working together and facilitating it among the countries.
This is the biggest achievement achieved at the meeting, Fisheries Ministry said.
