A helicopter carrying Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi and Iranian Foreign Minister Hosseini Amir-Abdollahian has reportedly crashed.
According to media reports, the helicopter was crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog on the way back from a visit to the border with Azerbaijan. East Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati was also onboard the helicopter, according to media sources.
Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said rescuers were still trying to reach the site due to the difficult weather conditions
Raisi was heading to the city of Tabriz, in the north west of Iran, after returning from an Iran-Azerbaijan border area, according to local media.
Iranian media reported that rescue teams are on their way to the site after reports that a helicopter in the convoy of three carrying President Raisi had had a rough landing over East Azerbaijan. The foggy weather has been a challenge for rescue teams who are now reportedly making their way to the crash site on foot.
Iranian state television said that the crash was due to adverse weather conditions and that injury or death of helicopter passengers can’t be confirmed. Reports are also coming in that 3 of the rescue workers trying to reach the crash site have also gone missing.
