The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised people to take precautions as the weather is expected to be severe over the next five days.

The National Weather Service, Maldives Meteorology, said today that the southwest monsoon is likely to intensify over the Maldives in the coming days.

"Winds are expected to be between 15 and 25 mph with gusts between 45 and 50 mph in the clouds. Seas will be rough and rain is expected in some parts of the country," they said.

Therefore, seafarers are advised to pay attention to the weather.

The NDMA said today that there have been reports of roofs being blown away during the rains and strong winds. Therefore, the agency has advised people to make their roofs windproof in advance and tie up other items that may be thrown away in the wind.

They have also advised people to be prepared for flooding and put sandbags on their doorsteps ahead of heavy rains. The NDMA has also advised people to move their belongings to a higher place or where they will not be affected by the water.

The NDMA has also advised people to keep electrical appliances turned off when not in use.
