Tree Top Hospital has announced the successful completion of IVF treatment in two patients who recently delivered their babies, marking a first in the country.

Tree Top introduced the IVF facility in 2023 with 16 patients undergoing IVF treatments. The hospital had previously announced that 6 of the 10 patients who underwent embryo transfer had conceived.

The first baby born from IVF treatment at Tree Top was delivered on Sunday and the second on Tuesday. Both babies were delivered via caesarean section and the hospital said both babies and mothers were doing well.

Addressing a press conference at Tree Top Hospital on Wednesday, The Hospital's COO Adil Moosa said that the mother of the child, who was born first after receiving IVF treatment, was a 36-year-old man who had undergone IVF four times in the past outside the country. The mother of the second-born child was 33 years old, he said.

"IVF is a global treatment, but it's completely new in the country. One of the biggest problems with this was that there was no fully complete IVF centre in the country. Giving the best possible medical treatment is already unresolved. Since the service is available only at Treetop Hospital, as there are import regulations, most of the time, prescriptions for each patient have to be given separately for each patient," Adil said.

He added that the hospital faced a lot of challenges early in its introduction of IVF services and some couples had to hesitate to seek the treatment from the maldives. He added that there were couples who did not want to take the treatment from the Maldives except after evaluating their IVF success.
