The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Maldives has revealed that two out of every five women in the Maldives give birth through c-sections.
According to a post by UNFPA Maldives on X, a c-section should be performed if there are additional complications during delivery.
The World Health Organization recommends that 10-15 percent of people have a c-section, while the rate in the Maldives is 40 percent, the organization said.
A c-section is the removal of the unborn child by cutting part of the mother's lower abdomen. This usually reduces the pain of childbirth.
According to the latest census, the number of women in the Maldives is 187,698. On average, 2-3 children are sought for each marriage.
