The parliamentary sitting scheduled for today has been adjourned as the required quorum to hold a sitting was not met despite several rounds of checks.

The parliamentary sitting was initially set to begin at 9:00am. Repeated attempts were made to commence the sitting until 11:05am – one attempt at 9:30am and another attempt at 10:00am.

After repeatedly having waited on the quorum to be met in order to hold today’s sitting the quorum was still not been met. Following this, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam decided to adjourn today’s sitting.

Aslam highlighted that enough lawmakers were present on the parliament premises to reach the quorum, even though they had not presented themselves to the floor after the quorum bell was rung.

Only one item is on the agenda for today's session. It is the debate on the Constitutional Amendment Bill moved by Addu City Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam.

There is little work to be done in the Parliament now, but there is a lot of work to be done in the committees.

Noting that the last sessions of the 19th Parliament are underway, Aslam asked the lawmakers to complete the work of the committees at the soonest possible.

Aslam said that by the end of the current 19th Parliament, 21 motions submitted by members to question ministers have not been fulfilled yet and 322 issues have to be answered along with complaints and letters submitted by various parties.

The last session of the Parliament will be held on next Monday, he said, adding that 21 issues were still pending before the Parliament.

Aslam said there are 322 cases of complaints and letters submitted to the parliament as per Article 99(n) of the Constitution.

The Speaker said no committee report that has not been circulated by the 10th of this month will be put on the agenda for the 13th session.
