The Government has asked the utility companies to adjust and amend the water and electricity bills to include discounts as per President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge.
Chief Spokesperson at the President's Office, Heena Waleed, posted on X on Thursday night that the discounts applied to the bills were not according to President Dr. Muizzu's pledge and as such the President has directed the authorities to resolved the issues with the bills.
"It is the President's pledge to provide relief on the utility bills during Ramadan. As it has been observed that the discounts on the utility bills are not according to the President's request, the companies have been directed to address the issue," Heena said.
Heena's post comes at a time when STELCO and FENAKA have already announced discounted bills.
"STELCO has decided to offer discounts on the electricity used during the last fasting month as promised by President Dr. Muizzu," Stelco Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said in a post on X on Thursday night. Fahmy said STELCO would do whatever necessary for the welfare of the citizens in line with the Administrations policies.
"As promised by Mohamed Muizzu, STELCO has decided to offer discounts on electricity used during the last Ramadan. The existing bills will be sent to the consumers as soon as possible after complying with the change," Fahmy said.
FENAKA's Managing Director Muaz Mohamed Rasheed said in a post on X last night that the bills for the last month of April included part of Ramadan.
"In order to ease the electricity bill, which has been increased due to the sharp increase in consumption of electricity, the process of re-billing is being carried out so that it does not exceed the march bill," Muaz said.
President Dr. Muizzu, during his visit to B. Eydhafushi on March 4, met with the people of the island and said that the electricity and water bills are usually very high during Ramadan, but that bills would not increase this time around.
"It's capped at the same rate in a normal month, which means it won't go beyond that, there will be electricity bills and water bills during Ramadan same as any normal month. I have asked the utility companies to ensure this and they have reassured me this will happen," President said.
He said that regardless of usage, the bills will not increase. President Dr. Muizzu said his decision was to provide a relief to the citizens.
