The current outbreak of chikungunya is still out of control and 134 cases have been reported so far, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said.

The highest number of chikungunya cases were reported in the Malé area. 130 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the area. The remaining four cases were found in Haa Alif Atoll, Baa Atoll and Shaviyani Atoll. Last month alone, 119 cases were reported in the city.

96 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the city. 34 cases have been reported in Hulhumale. According to the HPA, the spread of chikungunya has increased significantly in the past month.

Chikungunya is most common in people over the age of 25. So far, 115 of the chickenpox cases have been reported in people over the age of 25, according to the HPA. The remaining 19 cases were under 25 years of age.

Chikungunya is a viral fever transmitted by mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever. The disease causes joint pain and sometimes inflammation that lasts for many days even if the painful disease heals. Symptoms appear within 3-7 days of the infected mosquito bites.
