The main opposition party, Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) is set to hold a national congress session tonight.

This is the first National Congress session since the MDP's defeat in last month's parliamentary elections.

Members were elected to 93 constituencies in the 20th Parliament while MDP won 12 seats. The ruling PNC won a super majority and will have 76 members in the 20th parliament.

Speaking on a program for Adhadhu News, MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail said the party is working to rebuild after the unexpected loss at the Parliamentary Elections.

"There are a lot of discussions going on about the election and how things will be shaped in the future. There will be a session of the National Congress (tonight) to discuss it," Fayyaz said.

He said the government also believed that the MDP could get a majority in parliament but the government got a large majority due to fear and influence shown by the government. He said the MDP would re-establish itself and win the upcoming elections.
