The Department of National Registration (DNR) has said that efforts are being made to cancel expiry dates on ID cards for people over the age of 65 years.

The national registration made the statement at a meeting convened by senior officials of the Parliament's National Development and Heritage Committee as part of a review of the petition filed by Galolhu Uthuru MP Eva Abdulla, who said that the current deadline for the use of ID cards and passports did not have a sufficient validity period.

Yoosuf Abdul Ghafoor, Minister of State for Homeland Affairs, who is in charge of National Registration, said that the card tenure for those aged between 10 and 40 years is five years, while those above 40 will be 10 years.

He, however, added that as per the existing practice, there have been complaints that some senior citizens have expired their ID cards and are finding it difficult to renew their ID cards, so it has been decided that those above 65 years of age will not have an expiry date.

He said a paper has been prepared and now sent to the Cabinet after examining the technical aspects.
