The Prosecutor General (PG)'s Office (PG) has said that it has requested the Criminal Court to issue an order for the Maldives Police Service to produce former Managing Director of Maldive Gas Abdulla Maumoon in custody in the event he refuses to appear before the court in connection with corruption charges against him.
PG Office made the remarks in a statement announcing that Maumoon has been charged with seven counts of corruption.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has informed that Abdulla Maumoon is currently living abroad. Therefore, the Court has been requested to schedule the hearing of the case at the earliest date in order to expedite the process of his appearance.
"In the event of the accused refusing to appear before the trial court, the Court is also requested to issue an order on the Maldives Police Service to keep him in custody and produce him before the court. In the event of such an order being issued, the Maldives Police Service will be able to bring the accused back to the Maldives through Interpol," the PG Office said in a statement.
According to the PG office, Maumoon and some of his family members and some companies suspected of having links with him have been charged with seven counts of bribery.
