Progressive Congress Coalition's Chief Spokesperson Heena Walsh has said that the President is seeking legal advice on ratification of the Anti-Defection Bill passed by the Parliament.
Heena made the remarks while speaking at a press conference by the Progressive Congress Coalition in response to a claim by former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih that delaying the ratification of the Anti-Defection Bill is an obstacle to democracy.
President Solih had made the remarks during his visit to Maamendhoo for the parliamentary election campaign. Speaking at the meeting, President Solih stated that the President's presence at such an important time without enacting a law without enacting a law would be an open obstruction to democracy.
Heena on Sunday said that the Bill was sent to the President's Office at 2135hrs on April 7 for approval and ratification by the Parliament.
Heena said the President has 15 days from article 91 of the Constitution to ratify the bill sent by parliament and send it back to parliament for reconsideration.
"As per the provisions of the Law, which defines the definition and principles, the opportunity to ratify the bill expires on April 22," Heena said.
