President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Thinadhoo Island Council as a City Council.
According to the President's Office, the President has designated Thinadhoo Council in South Huvadhoo Atoll as 'Thinadhoo City Council'.
The President made the announcement under Section 51(d) of the Decentralization act (2010/7).
According to the President's Office, the name in English will be Secretariat of Thinadhoo City Council, and the government agencies have decided to continue the letter number 415 for Thinadhoo City Council office.
On August 30 last year, president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the granting of city status to Thinadhoo through his resolution. However, Thinadhoo Island Council was not converted into a city council due to differences in the interpretation of the law.

According to the bill, if the council representing the island or islands has less than one year to complete its term at the time of applying for the status of a city, then the status of a city will be granted only after the election of the newly constituted council, but if the term of the council is more than a year away from the expiry of its term, the island or island will be declared a city as per the amendment and converted into a city. it has been stated.
According to the bill, if a city is formed by the unity of all the islands within an administrative area, then the atoll council of an administrative area will be established from that time onwards, and the places maintained by the atoll council and the services provided by the atoll council will be maintained by the city council.
